Chapter Eleven
Todd lurches away from the warehouse and when he’s sure he is out of sight, he takes the sunglasses off and tucks them in his pocket; he can’t go leaving evidence lying around. The light around the warehouse is shitty except right over the front door and two more lights at the rear. Bad light is no surprise whatsoever for New Orleans, but it’s not the same here; the other warehouses are well lit because they have things to guard from thieves. This warehouse on the other hand hulks in shadows mostly, retreating away from the glow of most of the lights. Even bad people with a need for security are still bad people and bad people love the dark.
The poor light is another of those things that works in Todd’s favor though as he slides through the darkness like oil. His feet crunch lightly in the gravel of the small parking lot as he seeks out Glenn’s car. It is parked off to itself, closest to the warehouse, bathing in the deepest of the shadows. The car is black and nearly invisible in this light, but Todd knows it very well. After he pulls on his gloves, he runs his hand over the slick black metal and sighs. He’s been watching the warehouse now for a few days, he’s been taking notes, making a list, checking it twice—all of that gooey-good shit. By the time he was able to move around with more ease, Todd knew what he had to do.
His initial plan had not been fleshed out, but it had promised to be epic on a scale that was likely to get him dead for the trouble. Thanks to Boris forcing him into taking a break, he had time to reassess the situation—and revise his plan since he does not fancy dying anytime soon. Abducting a person is not on the same level as conning his way inside and then opening fire after obtaining the necessary door codes, but it’s much more likely to work and not end with the aforementioned morbidity that Todd is trying to avoid.
As he pulls his trick with the thin metal slim-jim, he feels quite confident that this was his best option. Glenn’s preference for old muscle cars was a real delight for Todd, realizing he doesn’t have an alarm on it was even better. A guy like Glenn does not think he needs such things as alarms because who would ever dare fuck with his toys?
Todd feels the slim-jim catch and pulls it upward. He smiles when the lock pops up with a click.
“Oooh, Barracuda,” Todd murmurs as he opens the door.
He raises the seat and slips inside to lie down on the floor behind the seats after locking the door again. The inside of the vehicle smells like leather conditioner and new car air freshener and it’s hot as hell. Todd is not bothered by the damp, rotten crotch of the heat tonight though because his spirits are so fucking high right now they’re orbiting the space station.
